Henry and Cecelia Magaziner Magaziners of Humenne Updated 3/7/2010

Collateral Lines

When I started this site, the only Hungarian Magaziners I could find in the United States were the children of Henry Magaziner. There were many Magaziners of Russian or Polish ancestry in the States, but the only ones from Hungary were Henry's family.

However, as I have gained further access to Hungarian and American Jewish records through JewishGen, Ancestry.com and other sources, I have found a number of other Hungarian Magaziners. Most of these Hungarian Magaziners can be connected to Henry with great confidence, as descendants of Henry's siblings or cousins. This page examines those collateral lines of descendants of Löwi Magaziner, who I believe is Henry's grandfather. The page begins with a tree illustrating the connections, followed by a genealogy report of information about these people and about the information used or assumptions made to connect them to this tree.

There are a few additional Hungarian Magaziners who cannot yet be connected to this tree. They are listed on the Other Magaziners page.

If you have any additional information about these people or their descendants, please email me!

Genealogy Report

First Generation

1. Löwi Magaziner
According to the Humenne death registry, Löwi and Lea Magaziner died in Humenne in the 1850s. They died in their 70s, lived at the same address, and were listed as married. They are the only Magaziners I have found in Hungary who are old enough to be the parents of the second generation of Magaziners, and they have the long lifespan that is characteristic of many of the Magaziner descendants. Several of the descendants of the second generation born after their death have names similar to Löwi and Lea, suggesting the common Jewish practice of naming a child after a deceased ancestor. I have assumed that Löwi and Lea are a married couple and are the parents of Anchell and Samuel, but I have no direct evidence of this relationship and no evidence of their existence other than their death records.
Children of Lowi and Lea Magaziner are probably:
  1. Samuel Magaziner
  2. Anchell Magaziner

Second Generation

Most of the records relating to Humenne Magaziners of the second generation have a name that is a variation on Anchell (Antsel, Antsil, Anton) or a variation on Samuel (Shmuel, Samiel). These two men are probably brothers, because a grandson of Anchell Magaziner (Hugo Magaziner) married a granddaughter of Samuel Magaziner (Sadie Bottenstein) and their marriage certificate said that they were second cousins.
2. Samuel (Israel) Magaziner (Shmuel, Samiel)
Samuel Magaziner was born in Humenne in 1811 (according to his death record) or 1813 (according to the 1869 Hungarian census). He was a carpenter, according to one of his descendants, and described himself as a merchant in the 1869 Hungarian census. He married first Sarah Katz, daughter of Rabbi Yitzchak Katz, and they had at least three children together. Sarah died in 1856 at the age of 40. Shortly after her death, Samuel remarried to Eszter Jacubovits (also known as Faiga). His first child with Eszter was born barely two years after Sarah's death. He had several more children with Eszter, and died in 1890 at the ripe old age of 79.
Children of Samuel Magaziner and Sarah Katz:
  1. Rezi Magaziner (marriage record identifies her father as Magaziner Samuel)
  2. Isak Magaziner (birth record identifies his father as Magazin Samuel)
  3. Chaje Magaziner (birth record identifies her father as of Magaziner S, or possibly L; this may be the same person as Pauline, because her birth year is unclear and her birth day is very similar)
  4. Pauline Magaziner (death record identifies father as Samuel Magaziner and Sarah; burial record gives her father's name as Israel)

Children of Samuel Magaziner and Eszter Jacubovits:

  1. Sara Magaziner (birth record identifies her parents as Samuel Magaziner and Esther)
  2. Lajos Levi Magaziner (birth record identifies his parents as Samuel Magaziner and Faiga; marriage record identifies his parents as Samuel and Eszter; descendant confirms he is the son of Samuel Magaziner and Eszter Jacubovits)
  3. Lisi Magaziner (appears in the 1869 census with Samuel and Eszter; this may be the same person as Lajos Levi)
  4. Löb Magaziner (birth record idenfies his parents as Samuel Magaziner and Ester)
  5. Berti Magaziner (appears in the 1869 census with Samuel and Eszter)
  6. Helena Magaziner (appears in the 1869 census with Samuel and Eszter)
3. Anchell Magaziner (Antsel, Antsil, Anton)
Anchell is the name of Henry Magaziner's father according to Henry's Philadelphia death certificate. Henry's mother's name is listed on the death certificate as Sarah Cooper. Anchell (or a name like it) is the father of several children in the Humenne birth registry. The mother's name is not listed in the birth registries, but until other evidence appears, I will assume that they all have the same mother, Henry's mother, Sarah Cooper. I have found no evidence of a date of birth for Anchell Magaziner, but I assume he died some time between 1845 (when son Jakob was conceived) and 1856 (when Ansel Weinberger was born, and presumably was named after his deceased great-uncle, in accordance with Jewish custom).
Children of Anchell Magaziner and Sarah Cooper:
  1. Henry Magaziner (death certificate identifies parents as Anschell Magaziner and Sarah Cooper)
  2. Emil Magaziner (birth record of Manuel Magaziner identifies father as Anton Magaziner; I assume Manuel is Emil)
  3. Miryam Magaziner (birth record identifies father as Magaziner A)
  4. Jakob Magaziner (birth record identifies parents as Magazin Antsil and Sondl?)

Third Generation

4. Rezi Magaziner (Resi, Rezie, Rosi, Rösl) (Samuel Magaziner2)
In 1853, 19-year-old Rösl Magaziner, daughter of Samuel Magaziner, married Salamon Weinberger, according to the Humenne marriage registry. Their names appear in various forms in several birth records over the next 15 years, her most common form being Rezi. They appear in the 1869 Hungarian census with several of their children. Rezi died of typhus in 1870 at the age of 36, according to the Humenne death registry. Her husband died in 1879.
Children of Rezi Magaziner and Salamon Weinberger:
  1. Moses Weinberger (Moritz) (birth record for Moses Weinberger identifies parents as Salamon Weinberger and Rosi; birth was witnessed by Levi Magaziner, possibly the Hebrew name for Löwi, who was still alive at the time; Moritz Weinberger appears in the 1869 census with Samuel Weinberger and Rezi Magaziner)
  2. Ansel Weinberger (Antal, Anschel) (birth record identifies parents as Salamon Weinberger and Resi; Antal Weinberger appears in the 1869 census with Samuel Weinberger and Rezi Magaziner; marriage record for Ancsel Veinberger identifies parents as Salamon and Rozi; subsequent marriage record for Antal / Anschel Weinberger identifies parents as Salamon and Rezi)
  3. Lea Weinberger (birth record identifies parents as Samuel Weinberger and Resi; Linka Weinberger appears in the 1869 census with Samuel Weinberger and Rezi Magaziner)
  4. Sandor Weinberger (appears in the 1869 census with Samuel Weinberger and Rezi Magaziner)
  5. Lövi Leanif Weinberger (birth record identifies parents as Salamo Weinberger and Resi Magaziner; Lajos Weinberger appears in the 1869 census with Samuel Weinberger and Rezi Magaziner)
  6. Bertha Weinberger (birth record identifes parents as Salome Weinberger and Resi Magaziner; marriage record for Berttha Veinberger identifies parents as Salamon / Rezi; Berta Weinberger appears in the 1869 census with Samuel Weinberger and Rezi Magaziner)
  7. Rozi Weinberger (appears in the 1869 census with Samuel Weinberger and Rezi Magaziner)
7. Pauline Magaziner (Samuel Magaziner2)
Pauline Magaziner was born in Hungary around March of 1846, according to her Ohio death certificate. Her parents wer Samuel Magaziner and Sarah. Her burial record indicates that her father's name was Israel Majaziner, but the burial record contains another significant error (giving her year of birth as 1864), so it's not clear how much weight should be given to the father's first name. It is not clear what her name originally was: in Sadie's birth record, the earliest record I have found, she is listed as Margaret. In the 1870 census, she is listed as Josephine. By 1880, she is Poulena, and that name seems to stick. It is possible that she is actually Chaje Magaziner, who appears in the Humenne birth registry, because I have found no other Humenne birth record that could account for Pauline, the day is close and the year of Chaje's birth record is not certain ("1845" comes from the preceding image, but the pages may be out of order). Pauline married Joseph Bottenstein, another Hungarian immigrant, in the United States around 1868. They lived in Columbus, Ohio through most of their marriage. Pauline died of pancreatic cancer in Columbus, Ohio in 1904 at the age of 57.
Children of Pauline Magaziner and Joseph Bottenstein:
  1. Sadie Bottenstein (appears in the 1870 and 1880 Ohio census with Joseph Bottenstein and wife)
  2. Mayme Bottenstein (appears in the 1880 Ohio census with Joseph Bottenstein and wife)
  3. Blanche Rose Bottenstein (appears in the 1880 Ohio census with Joseph Bottenstein and wife)
8. Sara (Zali, Sali, Roza) Magaziner (Samuel Magaziner2)
Sara is the first child of Samuel Magaziner and his second wife, Eszter Jacubovits, born about two years after the death of Samuel's first wife, Sarah Katz. Sara appears in the 1869 Hungarian census with Samuel and Eszter under the name Zali. In 1876, she married M. (Minim, Mark, Mano) Wächter, giving her first name as Sali. She died in 1889 at the age of 31, and the death record gives her name as Roza. Although her given name varies significantly in some of these records, they are all the same person because they are born at the same time and place and married to a man named Wächter.
Children of Sara Magaziner and M. Wächter:
  1. Jonathan Wächter (birth record identifies parents as M Wächter and Sali Magaziner)
  2. Lenni Lajos Wächter (birth record identifies parents as Wächter M and Magaziner Sali)
  3. Lea Wächter (birth record identifies parents as M Wechter and S Magaziner)
  4. Jakob Wächter (birth record identifies parents as Mark Wachter and S Magaziner)
  5. Samuel Wächter (birth record identifies parents as Mark Wachsler and Sali Magaziner; death record identifies father as Mark)
  6. David Wächter (birth record identifies parents as Mark Wachter and Sali Magaziner)
9. Lajos Levi Magaziner (Samuel Magaziner2)
Levi Magaziner was born in Humenne in 1860, the son of Samuel Magaziner and "Faiga," according to the Humenne birth registry. Faiga appears to be an alternate name for Eszter Jacubovits, because Lajos' great-granddaughter tells me that his full birth certificate lists Eszter Jacubovits as his mother. His secular name was Lajos. He married Maria Böhm, daughter of Vilmos Böhm and Regina Weisz, in Budapest in 1885. Lajos owned a shutter factory, making and selling wooden shutters with slats that could be opened or closed with a lever to keep out the light. Lajos died in 1939 at the age of heart failure at the age of 78. His shutter factory was later nationalized by the Hungarian communist government.
Children of Lajos Levi Magaziner and Maria Böhm:
  1. Elemér Magaziner (according to Lajos' great-granddaughter)
  2. Gyula Magaziner (according to Lajos' great-granddaughter)
  3. Böske Magaziner (according to Lajos' great-granddaughter)
  4. Pal Magaziner (according to his Yad Vashem record)
12. Berti Magaziner (Samuel Magaziner2)
Berti may be Albert Magaziner, a blinds manufacturer born around 1865 who had a brother Lajos who was also in the blinds business. All of this fits very well with Berti, who was born in 1866 and had a brother named Lajos who owned a shutter factory. The one hitch: Albert's great-granddaughter believes Albert was born in Nagybecskerek, not Homonna. Albert has several descendants, but I have not yet added them to this tree until we can clear up the details.
15. Emil (Manuel) Magaziner (Anchell Magaziner3)
Manuel Magaziner, son of Anton, in Humenne in 1843. The name Emil Magaziner first appears in the 1869 Hungarian census in the household of Sari Ganzfried, a "Publican" (innkeeper). His year of birth is listed as 1844. I believe this is Manuel, because the name Manuel comes from the Hebrew name Emanuel, which often becomes Emil in other languages, and the date of birth is close. Emil married Etelka Balkanyi in Kisvarda Szabolcs in 1871. Etelka was the daughter of Jacob Balkanyi and Maria Kohn. They originally lived in Humenne, having several children there, but later moved to nearby Sátoraljaújhely (Ujhely). Emil worked as an inkeeper in Ujhely, because his name appears under that heading in an 1891 Hungarian Industry and Trade Directory.
Children of Emil Magaziner and Etelka Balkanyi:
  1. Ruchel Magaziner
  2. Sali Magaziner
  3. Antal Magaziner
  4. Lövi Magaziner
  5. Nuchern Magaziner
  6. Gyula Magaziner
  7. Jeno Magaziner
  8. Nandor Magaziner

Fourth Generation

19. Ansel (Antal, Anschel) Weinberger (Rezi Magaziner4, Samuel Magaziner2)
Ansel Weinberger was born in Humenne in 1856. He was probably named for Anchell Magaziner, who was his mother's uncle. His birth (or possibly circumcision) was witnessed by Schaji Meisels, possibly Fani Magaziner's husband Simon Meisls. It is not clear how or if Fani is related to these Magaziners. Ansel appeared in the 1869 Hungarian census with his parents, Samuel Weinberger and Rezi Magaziner, under the name Antal. Ansel appears to have married twice: first to Eszter Mandel in 1890, then to Ilona Weinberger in 1891. I cannot find any record of Eszter's death or any other explanation of the end of his marriage. A duplicate record of his first marriage gives his name as Anasel / Eliezer Veinberger. I can find no record of children by either marriage. Wife Ilona is probably the Weinberger Antalné Weinberger Ilona (1878 - 1935) buried at Kozma Utcai Izraelita Temeto, though her date of birth is not consistent with her age at the time of her marriage to Antal. Antal is not buried with her.
23. Berta Weinberger (Rezi Magaziner4, Samuel Magaziner2)
Berta Weinberger was born in Humenne in 1868, the daughter of Salomo Weinberger and Resi Magaziner. In 1887, she married Elek Elia Friss (or Frish or Frisch) a farmer from Doghe, Hungary (apparently in or near Kisvarda). Berta died in 1945 and was buried at Kozma Utcai Izraelita Temeto.
Children of Berta Weinberger and Elek Friss:
  1. Rezi Gitel Kind Friss
  2. Rozi Gitel Raizel Friss (either a twin of the above, or simply a variant duplicate record)
  3. Jolan Friss
  4. Iren Szora Friss
  5. Joska Friss
  6. Aladar Friss
25. Sadie Bottenstein (Pauline Magaziner7, Samuel Magaziner2)
Sadie Bottenstein was born in Circleville, Ohio in 1869. She went into business for herself as a milliner (ladies' hat maker or merchant). She married Max Adolf Frank around 1890, but he died in 1896, leaving her with two small children. Sadie remarried in 1902 to her second cousin, Hugo Magaziner. Hugo moved back to Ohio with Sadie and helped raise her children. It appears that Sadie and Hugo may have had a child of their own, because there is a tombstone in an abandoned Jewish cemetery in Ohio for a six-year-old Hugo Magaziner.
Sadie Bottenstein's descendants are listed under Hugo Magaziner at Descendants of Henry Magaziner
26. Mayme Bottenstein (Pauline Magaziner7, Samuel Magaziner2)
Mayme Bottenstein was born in Ohio in 1871. She was in the millinery business with her sisters Sadie and Blanche. She married David Greenwald at some time before 1920. Mayme died in 1960. Her husband predeceased her. It appears that they had no children, because Mayme's obituary describes her as a beloved wife, sister and aunt, but not as a mother.
27. Blanche Rose Bottenstein (Pauline Magaziner7, Samuel Magaziner2)
Blanche Bottenstein was born in Ohio in 1876. She was in the millinery business with her sisters Sadie and Mayme. Around 1899, she married George Martin Simpson. Blanche died in 1943, and her husband George died in 1944. They had a son, but unfortunately the name is too common to be reliably traced further.
34. Elemér Magaziner (Lajos Levi Magaziner9, Samuel Magaziner2)
Elemér was the oldest son of Lajos Magaziner. There are Budapest grammar school records for Elemér Magaziner for the school years 1900-1901 and 1903-1904, giving a class number consistent with him being two years older than Gyula. Along with his brothers Pal and Gyula, he continued to maintain the family shutter business, though it was not what he would have chosen to do with his life. He married a gentile woman named Edit, and her gentile status helped save the family business from the Holocaust. Elemér, however, was not so fortunate: in poor health with only half a kidney, he was made part of a forced labor group at a brick factory. He died during a march toward the Mauthausen concentration camp around 1944. His two sons survived, and apparently moved to Mexico after the war. They may still be living. In fact, someone once contacted me to tell me that my information about Elemér Magaziner was wrong because he knew Elemér, and Elemér wasn't that old! The Elemér Magaziner he knew could have been this Elemér's son or grandson.
35. Gyula Magaziner (Lajos Levi Magaziner9, Samuel Magaziner2)
Gyula was born around 1890, according to various ship manifests. He is listed in Budapest grammar school records for the school years 1900-1901, 1903-1904 and 1906-1907. Along with his brothers Elemér and Pal, he continued to maintain the family shutter business, though it was not what he would have chosen to do with his life. He left Hungary early, going to America and later to London. In London, he married a woman named Irene. Pal's granddaughter told me a story that Gyula came to America to escort a coffin back home, and it appears that the coffin in question was that of Bernath Markovitz, husband of Sadie Magaziner. Bernath died suddenly while on vacation in Budapest, and a week after Bernath's death, a ship's manifest includes a Julius Magaziner whose contact in America was his aunt Markovitz at Sadie's home address.
36. Böske Magaziner (Lajos Levi Magaziner9, Samuel Magaziner2)
Böske Magaziner, the only daughter of Lajos, was educated in London and returned to study at the Hungarian College of Music. She was a beautiful woman, and worked as a piano teacher, a singer, and was involved in live theater. She went to Hollywood, where she used the name Elizabeth Magaziner, but never found stardom. Instead, she married an American engineer named William Faddis. They had a daughter, who may still be living.
37. Pal Magaziner (Lajos Levi Magaziner9, Samuel Magaziner2)
Pal Magaziner was born in Budapest in 1898. There are Budapest grammar school records for a Pal Magaziner for the school year 1910-1911, consistent with his date of birth. Along with his brothers Elemér and Gyula, he continued to maintain the family shutter business, though it was not what he would have chosen to do with his life. He was a dashing character who loved life and was a very accomplished mountain climber and skier. He led many Alpine tours with his wife, Róna Magdolna, as a hobby. Apparently Róna Magdolna was the first female High Alpine Ski Guide. During the Holocaust, he was forced to work in a brick factory with his brother Elemér. He died of starvation in the Mauthausen concentration camp about a week before it was liberated.
Children of Pal Magaziner and Róna Magdolna:
  1. Marianna Magaziner
38. Ruchel Magaziner (Emil Magaziner15, Anchell Magaziner3)
Ruchel Magaziner was born in Humenne in 1871. She married Markusz Nagy of Battyan, Hungary and they had a son. It appears that Markusz and Ruchel did not survive the Holocaust: their names appear in a list of Hungarian victims, with their status at the end of the war listed as "Missing." Son Bela's name does not appear on any lists.

Fifth Generation

52. Marianna Magaziner (Pal Magaziner35, Lajos Levi Magaziner9, Samuel Magaziner2)
Marianna Magaziner was born in 1924. She and her mother survived the Holocaust by using the identities and documentation of Catholics who had died. After the war, she became a film director. Among other projects, she made a documentary about the Holocaust, and participated in Steven Spielberg's Shoah project. She married fellow film director Mihály Szemes, and they had two daughters, still living. One of those daughters recently contacted me and helped to link up many of the loose ends previously floating around this site.
